In France, L’Atelier Paysan has embodied this vision since 2009. Born from the initiative of a farmer and a local technician, it grew into a cooperative that helps farmers design and build their own tools and infrastructure for small-scale farms. Farmers co-design with engineers, learn to weld and repair, and all plans are shared under Creative Commons licenses.
Today, their activities include:

* A platform supplying spare parts and tool kits for final assembly.
* Academic partnerships, political education, and participation in public debates on technology.
Their purpose is clear: to strengthen peasant agroecology, technical autonomy, and resilience—opposing agro-industry while cultivating farmer-led knowledge.
Encounters and exchange
As part of the GIAA online Encounters, L’Atelier Paysan shared their experience of farmer-led research and development with Tzoumakers (Greece). On September 9th (Encounter 2), they described how they create spaces for farmers to express needs, co-design tools with support from engineers, and collect user feedback to improve prototypes. These insights are crucial for younger, less experienced sister-organizations learning how to structure farmer-led innovation processes.
Lessons from the field
Marie Oceáne, from L’Atelier Paysan, framed (interview 2023) innovation not as chasing novelty but as “refining what works”. Producing wine without chemicals, she notes, is a time-tested innovation that strengthens autonomy, unlike digital add-ons that often introduce hidden costs and dependency. For her, “innovation is also about consciously choosing your dependencies.”
She highlights that self-building creates a culture of repair: when farmers design their own tools, they understand them deeply and can fix breakdowns quickly instead of waiting months for industry suppliers. L’Atelier Paysan takes pride in producing tools that farmers actually use—countering the waste of expensive machines abandoned because they don’t fit real needs.
A tool in progress: manual compost spreader
One of their latest projects illustrates this ethos. Together with ADAF and a group of market gardeners in Drôme, they are co-designing a manual compost spreader for no-till systems.
The farmers wanted a lightweight tool, halfway between a two-wheel barrow and a four-wheel cart. It can transport compost like a wheelbarrow and then, on the crop bed, rest on four wheels while a conveyor belt distributes organic matter. To power the conveyor, the group chose a common farm tool: a drill. This makes the spreader affordable, easy to build, and reliable.
Learning from past attempts documented on their forum—even failures—the team refined the design with rollers driving the conveyor belt. A wooden pre-prototype is now under test, with the drill connected via a bicycle brake-cable system. The next challenge is reducing the drill’s rotation speed six-fold to ensure smooth spreading.

On October 14, the farmers will meet again to improve the prototype and finalize the chassis so the tool is ergonomic and practical.

Through projects like this, L’Atelier Paysan is doing more than designing tools: it is cultivating a socio-technical ecosystem. This ecosystem strengthens agroecology, builds resilience, and democratizes technology. By connecting with peers like Tzoumakers in Greece, they show how grassroots innovation can resist corporate capture, valorize farmers’ knowledge, and weave a living commons of autonomy and sustainability.

On operations, AP started a decade ago with mobile workshops—tooling packed into vans to run on-farm trainings across regions. They still run seven mobile workshops and have three fixed workshops (the latter are much costlier). Early work centered on tools for permanent-bed vegetable systems, then broadened to greenhouses, poultry structures, viticulture, and more. A current bestseller is a self-built bread oven, partly because industrial suppliers have long waitlists; self-build delivers quicker, appropriate solutions and even industry acknowledges their quality.
Politically, Oceán sees AP’s work as a fight for autonomy—understood as consciously choosing one’s dependencies. AP challenges requests that would entrench reliance (for instance, complex electronics that farmers cannot repair). The aim is a community of “handmakers” and a more democratic, fulfilling rural economy where industry no longer dictates the terms.
AP also collaborates with social scientists. They study the “place of machines” on farms, co-researching in farmer–researcher pairs to understand why farmers often seek ever bigger, more powerful equipment and how to unlearn that impulse for resilience. They also investigate the role of women in agriculture and how agricultural students form their ideas about machinery. This research is in early stages but is shaping AP’s approach to technology, culture, and training.
