Born in 2009 from the vision of a farmer and a local technician, l’Atelier Paysan has grown into a cooperative that helps farmers across the country design and build the tools and infrastructure they need for small-scale farming. Farmers co-design their tools with engineers, learn to weld and repair, and share all designs under open licenses. Today, their activities range from training in welding, mechanics, woodwork, and farm electricity, to collaborative research and development, to open diffusion of plans, to supplying spare parts in kit form. They also engage in academic partnerships, political education, and public debates on technology and agriculture. The goal is clear: peasant agroecology, technical autonomy, and resilience.
Farmers co-design with engineers, learn to weld and repair, and all plans are shared under Creative Commons licenses.
Today, their activities include:
* Training programs in welding, woodwork, mechanics, and farm electricity.
* Collaborative research and development, with open-source tool designs.
* A platform supplying spare parts and tool kits for final assembly.
* Academic partnerships, political education, and participation in public debates on technology.
(from Atelier Paysan Website) L’Atelier Paysan: a tool box of farmer-driven technologies and practices. Based on the principle that farmers are themselves innovators, we have been collaboratively developing methods and practices to reclaim farming skills and achieve self-sufficiency in relation to the tools and machinery used in organic farming.
In 2011, we set ourselves up as a staffed organisation working to promote farm-based inventions, collectively develop new technological solutions adapted to small-scale farming, and make these skills and ideas widely available through courses and educational materials. Since 2015, we have also been offering resources and guidance to farmer-driven projects involving the building or renovation of agricultural buildings.
